Self - publishing

Self-publishing – is the publication of a book by its author without an established publisher It means independence and it also means making mistakes, but the thing about mistakes you learn from them. As a self-published author, you pay the full cost of producing your work and are responsible for marketing and distribution. This means copyright, the finished copies, all subsidiary rights, and all profits are exclusively yours unless you use Amazon. You upload your manuscript to create space they provide you with free tools to help you. Self-publishing and free distribution for books, CDs, DVDs, and video downloads on demand. There are many sits you can use for self-publishing.

To date, I’ve used Createspace for "self-publishling".  As of right now, I have published four books through there site. For me personally, it was on the easier side to publish my books with their guidance. Now "self promoting" on the other hand, has definitely been a constant struggle.

Are you a self-publisher? If so, tell me about what it was like to publish your first book and the obstacles you went through. Was it exciting? frustrating? What was the process of getting others to recognize or become aware of your work as an author?

Excerpt from my upcoming book!

"September 2017"
 Create space will publish......
Richard Bellerose
LE PHYSIO THERAPEUTE
(The Physical Therapist)

Below you will find an excerpt from the novel's opening pages...

My name is Elizabeth Marie Daniels. My days are spent going on interviews; you see I would love to become an actress, to follow in the footsteps of one of my favorite actresses, Betty Davis. My nights are spent helping a friend by working at his bar. I work from 8 pm to 2 am bartending. You ask how is it that I can afford to work part-time? My parents left me a substantial amount of money, not that I have used any of it. Simply knowing that it’s there if I need it is a beautiful thing.

One day, I was leaving my agent’s office in New York City. I was on my way to the subway to catch the 1 o’clock train to Long Island. I was excited—I had just received my first movie script.

                        * * *

His name was Peter Issoni, a rich kid with a trust fund. You know, the kind that gets a new BMW every year, but rides around in a limo. His days are spent sleeping and his nights are spent partying. Today, Peter’s on his way to meet his dad Nick in New York City.

Peter stepped out of the limo and ran right into Elizabeth. Her script fell to the ground. He bent down to help her pick it up. They both reached for the same sheet. When they touched, it was like fire. They both immediately jumped back. Peter and Elizabeth looked into each other’s eyes. She took my script from him and said, “Thank you,” before walking away.

Peter turned to look at the girl as she ran to the subway. He took off behind her into the subway. The doors closed, and she was gone. How could I have let her get away? He sighed in frustration. Let me get out of here. My dad’s waiting for me.

                        * * *

On my way to my dad’s office, I kept seeing her face. The girl that ran into the subway. We will meet again.

“Hi, Peter, your dad’s waiting for you.”

“Come in son, have a seat. Can I get you anything? Do you know why I asked you here today, son? What do you want to do with your life? You’re 24 years old, it’s time you joined the family business! Peter…” his dad was talking to him, but he didn’t hear a word his dad was saying. Peter’s mind was on the girl, the one who he ran into earlier. The girl he’s going to marry one day…

                        * * *

Elizabeth, you’re the only person I know that has millions in the bank and is still working.”

“Lisa, that money was given to me by my parents. They’re gone, so the money means a lot to me. Because I’m working, I don’t have to use any of it. Plus, I’m only working part-time, and helping out my friend. Lisa, it’s not like I’m working every day. In my free time, I can go on an audition.”

“How’s that working out for you?”

“I have an audition next week.”

“Elizabeth, you have the best life. I anticipate you being a big movie star one day.”

“Yeah, definitely. It was drilled into my head, by my dad, ‘you have to be you, and you must be the best version of yourself.’”

“Indeed. Do you have to work Friday night?”

“Yes.”

“We never get the chance to go out anymore.”

“We can go out next weekend—I’m off next Friday.

“If I was rich, I would be on an island somewhere with a margarita in my hand, laying back and having someone waiting on me. Or I would be living in a palace. No, a mini mansion. Or going on a shopping spree.”

“Lisa, just because I have a couple million in the bank, doesn’t mean I’m rich. You could buy a house and the money could almost be gone. Or an expensive car.”

“Elizabeth, you keep telling yourself that.”

“Lisa, I need to get some sleep.  I’m working tonight.”

“What else is new?”

“I’m sorry, I love you.”

“I’ll talk to you soon.”

                        * * *

It’s Friday night, I should get ready for Richard’s bachelor party. What should I wear? Something that will stand out from the rest of the guys. Once they start drinking, things will get crazy. I don’t want to end up wearing someone’s drinks or vomit. My mom came out to the pool house.

“Mom, what’s going on?”

“Why does something have to be going on? Can’t I visit my favorite son?”

“I’m your only son.” You never come out here to visit.”

“That’s not true.”

“What’s going on? Mom, what’s this about?”

“Your dad really wants you to work with him. Peter, one day your dad would like to retire. He would love for you to take over the family business. He told me that he spoke to you about it the other day. To tell you the truth, he said you were in some type of trance. I know sometimes that when your dad starts talking, you can’t get a word in edge wise. But for me, you’re 24-years-old now. Peter, it’s time you began thinking about your future.

“I’ll think about it, Mom. Right now, I need to get ready for Richard’s bachelor party.”

“I love you, sweetheart. Have fun tonight.”

The phone rang.

“Hey, Richard, what’s up?

“I’m on my way.”

“My mom was just here; she was trying to lay a guilt trip on me.”

“About working for your dad?”

“What else.”

“Peter, maybe you should work for your dad.”

“I was thinking once I turn 30, then I’d work for my dad.”

“I’m sitting in front of your house.”

“I’m on my way out.”

“Peter, when are you going to settle down with Miss Right?”

“I don’t know. Richard, you’re my best friend, but just because you’re getting married, don’t try to marry the rest of us off. Stop! Before you go any further—I thought I found Mrs. Right the other day. I bumped into her.”

“I’m intrigued.”

“We literally bumped into each other…”

“Still intrigued.”

“I was on my way to see my dad at his office. I was stepping out of the limo; she was running out of a building. I think she had a script in her hand, maybe a movie script. I’ve never seen her before, so I don‘t know if she’s a movie star. But when we touched, there was fire. Feeling compelled, I ran after her, but she ran into the subway. The door closed and she was gone. I’m determined to find her. I’ve been visiting my dad a little more often.”

“Peter, are you telling me you’re in love?”

“Something like that.”

We walked into the bar. Matt, Steven, Paul, Mike, and even Richard’s two brothers were at the table.

“What’s up, guys? The bachelor’s here, let’s party.”

“Okay, we’re ready.”

“Hi, I’m your waitress, Kristy. What can I get for you?”

“Beer, tequila and rum.”

“Kristy, have you ever heard of a drink called birth control? “

“Yes!”

“I’ll have one of those.”

“I’ll be back with your drinks.”

I looked up and noticed the girl at the bar. “Guys, I’ll be right back,” I called over my shoulder. I walked over to the bartender and asked for a dirty martini.

                        * * *

“Coming right up!” Elizabeth was fixing the drink without looking up. “Here you go.” She looked up and spilled the drink. This is bizarre, how does he know where I work? Why is he smiling at me? She thought. “I’m sorry; let me fix you another drink. Sorry about that, here you go.” When they touched, there was fire. “Wow.” What is it about this guy?

She definitely felt that, she looked confounded.

He paid for the drink with a hundred-dollar bill. Predictable, look at the smirk on his face; he must be one of those rich kids. “Let me get your change.”

“Beautiful, you can keep the change.”

“Thank you.”

My Favorite Passtime

Obsessing over my 5 favorite couples in Hollywood

Prince Harry and Meghan  -  The Prince and suits actress have been dating for a year now.  And already, we want them engaged and Married.  The UK and the US coming together. A perfect combination.  I enjoyed seeing the photo of Meghan and Prince Harry arriving to Pippa's reception in Chariot.  The best part was seeing Harry driving his lady to the reception.

Kanye and Kim - Our  King and Queen of fashion. Whether they're dressing up or down. No one can out dress the famous rapper and his reality television personality. I do believe Kim and Kanye West put Givenchy and Lavin on the map.  That beautiful famous life that they lead.  You can't hate on it. From Thailand, Greece, Montana, Bora Bora, Armenia, London, Domincan Republic, Paris, St Barts and Mexico.

Russell and Ciara - The quarter back and singer Mr. and Mrs. Wilson. What a fun couple. They remind me of old Hollywood. William Powell and Myrna Loy in the Thin Man.  The series is everything. I could watch them all day. What a beautiful couple. They welcomed baby Sienna Princess Wilson into the world 4-28-17.

The Weekend and Selena - The cutest couple. He makes her so happy. I've never seen her like this before. They remind me of Jennifer and Puffy, from back in the day. Jet setting around the country. Selena's Mom gave the couple her seal of approval on Instagram. I loved seeing the couple at the Met Gala. Love was in the air. Between the whispering sweet nothings and the kissing . I here the bells...

Rob and Fka Twigs - Love this couple. The hunky actor and singer are a low key couple. It was revealed they're engaged. It's funny, every time the couple's apart for a few weeks. There's speculation of trouble in paradise. The way they stare at one another, while they're on the red carpet. It's like no one else is around.

Who are some of your favorite Hollywood couples?

A Salute To All Mother's

Happy Mother's Day! To all Mother's and Grandmother's around the world.  I know sometimes you don't feel appreciated through the years, but without Mother's where would we be?  You are an inspiration to all.  Mother's are the glue that holds the family together.  Thank you, for the sacrifices' you make.
I know everyone's not as close with there mom like they should be, but look at it like this. You only get one mom. Love on her and cherish one another before it's too late.  Believe me, I know what I'm talking about. With me mom, I don't know where to begin. Though I can never repay you for raising me.  Through the years, my mom and I have not been as close as we should have.  That's due to me, not seeing things through her eyes.  She's gone now my little angel, rest in peace.  My Mom wasn't close with her Mom, due to her working all the time.  That's one thing I learn fro my Mom. To make time for my daughter. I guess that's why my daughter and I are so close.

Enjoy your Mother's Day!

Passing Judgement on Others

We're so quick to judge others. Take for instance, well before you would drive up to a corner or a light there would be a man standing there with a sign in his hand asking for help.  Now, we have women and there families asking for help.  I can remember riding in my car with a friend, pulling over to give this man three dollars. She said, "What are you doing? The first thing he's going to do with that money is buy some beer." Alright, I'm okay with that. First off we don't know what that man has ben through. The sign read: "I lost my job and can't afford to feed my family." You would think she'd have some compassion, for this man. To me, that means he's in a bind he doesn't know where the families next meal's coming from. So yes, he deserves to have a drink. I'm just glad they have Dollar Tree Stores all over the place.

Me, I can say yes, I have passed judgment on this guy who's a veteran. For three years, he would be parked at this light.  As soon as you come off the parkway.  he was there with his sign asking for money.  Always dressed nice. He has a very nice van. With my dad being a veteran, I know what they offer you. Again, I don't know what's going on in his life. One thing I can say is, this veteran always has a smile on his face. I admire this man, for doing what he needs to do for himself.

I have a twenty year old daughter, it doesn't matter if there someone standing out there with a sign. She want's to give them  something food or money.  She doesn't read their sign. My daughter determined to help in anyway that she can. It's funny, we can learn a lot from our kids. Let's stop judging people.

Who have you passed judgment on?

My Personal Life

Let's see...I'm dealing with a parent with Dementia.  Can I tell you that's an illness I wouldn't wish upon my worst enemy.  Take for instance, today we're dealing with a clogged toilet due to my dad throwing something down it.  We did every thing we could do on our end.  Oh, yeah, the tub clogged too!  Time to rent an electric snake.
My dad was the coolest dad "a veteran."  The stories he would tell me.  They were awesome, from growing up on a farm to a cement truck driver, he made shop steward. That means, telling the guys what they need to do for the day and were the concrete has to go!  Very funny man.  He's been dealing with this illness since January 2013.  He's still funny at times.  Don't get me wrong, I love my dad. As my brother would say, I love you like "cook food."  But it gets hard times, sleepless nights, being accused of things I didn't do, the arguing, the cursing, his favorite word the f word.  "the list goes on...
Then there's the family.  Siblings, are suppose to be a blessing.  My siblings, are a curse.  Always telling me what I should be doing.  Hey, why don't you do it?  And let me take a vacation.  Like I said, I've been dealing with this illness since 2013 what are we in now? 2017 Sorry for ranting and raving....

My Research

This is how I prepare myself for research.  Sometimes, I'm in the zone and I can't stop writing.  I'll use a post-it.  I'll make a note of what I need to research Later, I'll use the internet if I'm writing and I come up with a place, and need to know more about it. I use the net search engines are so helpful. Later, I go back and fill in the gaps.

Everyones research is differ I suppose whether you're using the library, Internet or speaking with someone.  To tell you the truth, I thought as a writer of non-fiction, that you didn't need to research. "Just put whatever" that's not true! Readers that are familiar with the place will let you know. I've been on a couple of sites and some of their opinions...Wow! Well let's just say...They will let you know you made a mistake.  So if I get something wrong, please don't come for me. I'll do better the next time!

How do you do your research for a book or whatever you're searching for?

My Writing Routine

Where I like to put pen to paper.  It really doesn't matter where I'm at to get inspired.  Views do nothing for me, if I have writers block.  Most of my writing is done at the kitchen table.  More room!  My desk literally has no space for my writing.

One day, I hope to have an office with lot's of room for my books and a place to write.  It doesn't have to be decorated fancy, as long as I have a place to write.  In the  morning, noon, or night. I don't have a set time, for when I like to write.

How many words I write a day?

I can't tell you how many words I write a day, too many distractions.  I would love to hide and devote all my time to writing, but "duty calls."  I'm dealing with a parent with dementia.  Believe it or not it's a full time job.

What do I drink while writing?

I'm elated that I don't drink coffee or tea while writing.  To tell you the truth, I don't drink coffee at all.  I prefer water only!

     Procrastinator

OF course, I'm a procrastinator.  I'm quite sure most writers are.  Even though I love what I do.  It's a challenge for me while blogging.  I have to check my e-mail, check on my dad, and then complain to my daughter about how things are going.  Which she doesn't her me, do to her watching make-up video.  Finally, it's time to sit down and continue blogging or writing.

What's your writing routine?

How I name my Characters

That depends on the type of story I'm writing about.  Take for instance, when I was writing "the Woman in the Black Cloak."  Frustration set-in. I knew it was a story about a witch that wanted revenge for the death of her parents and grand parents.  I figured that the story should take place in Salem Lot.  You assume all witches come from Salem Lot. Very intelligent of me. Not!  Boy, did I make an awful blunder.  Witches can also come from Europe....

Characters  - I knew that I needed a couple of witches; warlocks, unicorns, black panthers, and the humans.  They had to have awesome names.  The names should suit the characters personality.  The names I came up with goes along with the story.

For the names of the witches; warlocks, unicorns, and black panthers.  It was a challenge at first, but I made the decision to go with the internet.

Google: Names of the 1800's Salem Lot.  "Witches and warlocks," you would be surprise what you can find.

Humans: I used the names from television, movies, or from you tube. As long as the characters name, goes along with the story.

How do you come up with your characters name?

When I'm Stuck

When I'm writing a manuscript and I get stuck and don't know which way the story should go.  I can remember going into panic mode.  After writing nine manuscripts, you would think I would be use to it.  Well, this is my story...

     "Will Elizabeth marry Peter?"
"Should Elizabeth be in the story?"
"When should the villain reveal himself?"
"In the middle or towards the end of the story?"
     "Should there be a villain?"
"Will Peter end up saving the day?"

So many questions.  Most people would say "keep working, you don't want to lose any momentum you started with."  For me, I take a break!

One day, while looking through a magazine. I don't remember which magazine it was.  I came across this saying "When you're stuck, take a break." Words to live by! I ended up cutting the saying out of my magazine and adding it to my Vision Board. It not only works when I'm writing, but if I'm going through other things that's going on in my day to day crazy life.

What are some of the things you do when you're stuck?

Crafting My Story

Crafting My Story   A story should have characters, where, plot, a hero, and a ending.

Characters   I always say to tell a compelling story it's obvious one must come up with some interesting characters. Characters are what makes your story come alive. Don't forget, they should have awesome names.  I'm quite sure other's would beg to differ.

Where  Every good story should have a "where.' That's the Setting a time and place.

Plot  A stories plot is what happens in your story you need to have a plot to keep the story moving along. Most plots are about conflict between the characters.  Without it, you won't have an interesting story.

A Hero  All good stories must a hero. A hero transforms an ordinary story into an extraordinary story.

The Ending  Most endings, end up with a happily ever after. A resolution you could say it's like a save the day type of thing.

Stories are simply the reflections of our day to day lives. Our lives are a collection of stories, the things we go through from day to day.  The good times and the bad.  Always remember, stories have a beginning, middle and an end.  Once you learn how to put them together the rest will flow.

Would you like to hear how I began telling my stories?  Some of you may find it strange, but I began all of my stories in the middle.  Then I move on to the end.  I take a break then I start at the beginning.  I end up with three piles.  Now it's time to tie them together.

Inspiration

Wow...There are books that can change your life. I mean after reading the Twilight Saga that we it for me.  That began my love of reading.  Before that, I've never read a book from start to finish within a couple of days.  I've read those books maybe three times. Very inspiring. I didn't own any books prior to the Twilight Saga.  Oh my... has my book collection grown.  Some of the books I own: Stephanie Meyers -The Twilight Saga, I can't forget The Host, John Steinbeck - East of Eden one of my favorites, The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men, Carson McCullers - The Ballad of the Sad CafĂ©, Nicholas Sparks - The Lucky One, Jack Kerouac - On The Road, Stieg Larsson - The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl who Played with Fire, The Girl who Kicked the Hornet's Nest. I could go on and on. One day, I hope to get Stieg Larsson - The Expo Files and Carson McCullers - The Member of The Wedding.

Reading all of those amazing books. Has even inspired me to write my own books. The Woman in the Black Cloak, and Mick 2.0 The Take over. Along with my first coloring book Classic Sculptures & Statues. I'm so grateful to Stephanie Meyers for the Twilight Saga. Without those books, I would never had the nerve to become a writer. Fiction books are my favorite, but I'll read mostly anything. Fiction it's funny, it took me awhile to understand it. "Fiction" literature created from the imagination. "Nonfiction" refers to literature based in fact.

My First Blog

I've never attented any writing classes... But writing fiction stories was something I love to do. Since 2010, I've been writing off and on. When one of my friends told me about Amazons Kindle Direct Publishing, I was skeptical at first. I thought the only way to have a book out, was to submit my novel to an agent or a big publishing house. Wish I knew they would reject my novel. Do to there are so many other writers out there way better than me... An agent was out of the question. Being the aspiring author  I was. After speaking with my friend I went for it. Amazon has allowed me the freedom to write what ever I want to! "Self-publishing." Wow...what a beautiful and amazing thing.

My first self-published Kindle release, "The Woman in The Black Cloak," didn't do as well as I hoped it would. It got off to a slow start. That was due to me, not marketing the book, in a way that it should have been done. I didn't have the money to hire professional proofreads or editors to go though my novel. For my covers, my daughter Sahara Coleman designed them. On day, I'll get the chance to use a professional cover artist. My daughter and I handle all the marketing via amazon author page, my website and social media. My new release Richard Bellerose LEPHYSIOTHE RAPEUTE (The Physical Therapist) will be released in May.
